This weekend will have some restrictions due to two Buddha days being adjacent (Asalha Bucha and Buddhist Lent) and coinciding with the king's birthday.

There will be restrictions on the sale of alcohol from midnight this Thursday till midnight on Saturday.

Before and after that, sales as normal.

Saturday is the birthday of the king and Monday has been declared a holiday in lieu, but no alcohol restrictions are expected.

During the restricted times, bars may be closed or open for soft drinks only. This depends on the local police and bars are often not informed till the day before.

I expect late night clubs etc. will be closed tomorrow (Thursday) -- check with them.

Does anybody know...

Will this be one of those times of road-clogging movements of people? Or is it OK to expect just normal congestion around the country?

(How might Pattaya be this weekend given the OP's helpful information....?)

Thanks

since I was there during previous dry holiday Vishaka Bucha I'd not too worry about congestion but be inclined to spent that weekend in Pattaya rather  than in BKK.

Few Bangkok bars were closed , in Pattaya all were opened , just did not serve an alcohol, at least not openly, ahem

From today's NATION.

Police will strictly enforce the ban on liquor and beer sales on Asanha Bucha (July 27) and Buddhist Lent, Royal Thai Police deputy spokesman Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen said.

He said Police Commissioner General Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda had instructed chiefs of the nine provincial bureaux and Metropolitan Police Bureau to be strict about the ban on Friday and Saturday.

Although Thailand is a secular society, the sale of alcoholic drinks is banned at department stores,

convenience stores and entertainment venues on Buddhist national holidays.

The ban goes onto effect at 12.01am on Friday and remains in place through midnight Sunday.

I suspect that  "Through midnight Sunday"  really means 'until midnight on Saturday'.

It's a long holiday weekend, including Monday (the King's birthday (observed)); therefore, you might expect the usual Bangkok long weekend traffic.

Pattaya is... well... at rest.

Jomtien Complex deserted... Sunee looks almost post-apocalyptic in its darkness... Did not even try boyztown... This will be a restful weekend, hehe.

By the way. - none of this stopped the persons of the middle eastern persuasion from being obnoxious on their motorbikes.

Just curious: whatever happened to those South Asian "tailors" that would accost people on the streets? Gone, and not missed...

Went to Boyztown this evening and ate at the Am***** Hotel. Very good and enjoyed quite a few drinks. Presumably rules for a Hotel. Ahem.! Shhhh... say no more!!

Well, I got to bed early last night... for the first time in a long time - even if not exactly by chioce, hehe - Off to the beach here at Jomtien now (staying at the Agate again... a curious place it is becoming!)

Will tonight be another early night for me? (My way of asking if I should not go out hunting the Sois for an open club...)

I assume that this does not apply to massage places... true? Suddenly feeling some lower back discomfort I think!

A long time ago Jomtien Beach used to serve beer on dry days -- is this still so?

Last night was a quiet night in Silom soi 4 with Balcony being the only open bar (soft drinks and food only).
Twilight and Patpong 2 completely closed -- eerily dark.
Tonight I suspect that a lot more bars will be open with soft drinks only, then normal service after midnight.
As I said earlier, last night Balcony announced that all soft drinks and food will be at 25% discount 6 till midnight today (Saturday) -- then service as normal .
From midnight till 02:00, two nights partying to make up for.

All bars in Boyztown and Patayalandarea were also closed yesterday, with the exception of X-boys which had dressed boys and soft drinks.

It's ok to call them indians. And they're still on Beach road.
